I am terribly sad to report that Mrs. Salazar passed away on Thursday, August 11. She was very sick with breast cancer and her main goal this past year was to make it through the school year. She was an amazing person to be able to tough it out like that, and I have so much admiration for her. And I will miss her deeply.

I apologize for the missing blogs. It's been a little hectic around here.

Tomorrow we have the following:

1. Last day to turn in money ($25) and permission for Camp Koinonia

2. Last day to turn in permission for walking field trip on Tuesday to Beach for cleanup

3. Greek myth test (use study guide and Gods/Goddesses chart to study)

4. All Greek myths due to present to class. PLEASE TEST VIDEO AND SOUND ON A MAC FIRST, OR BRING A PC LAPTOP.

5. Last day to take AR tests for Reading Grade.

6. Last group of Environmental Speeches

I will still allow AR for Bingo rows (that count toward the black out only) until next WEDS.

Go Team Jamaica! It was great to see our class supporting the athletes, who did very well at the International Games. Thank you to the Cook, Perry, and Smith family for driving. Congrats to the athletes who worked so hard to compete.

Speeches begin on Monday. The following students will present their Environmental Speech and Powerpoint (but not necessarily in this order):
Teal, Jesse, Sam, Quin Lin, Dean, Cassie, Patrick

Students need to practice at least 10 times, with a computer with the Powerpoint going, for pacing.

Thank you so much for all the positive comments last night. This class has worked hard this year and we all have a lot to be proud of!

We are still working on quite a few things in these last few weeks. Here's a run down:

The Giver (Lit Study Book) must be completed by Monday. Final is Tuesday.
Diagrams and drawings corresponding to Power Points are due on Monday, and bring flashdrive
News by teams is due on Monday

Greek Myth Projects and test will be due on May 26. Myth NOTES (see packet) are due on May 19
Sentences and definitions for Lit Study are due on Tuesday
We will go to visit AJHS on Thursday. Anyone without a signed permission slip will not be able to attend the session there.
We do NOT have enough drivers to go to watch the International Games competition. Please, if you can, drive the spectators (the team is taken care of) to cheer them on! You do not have to stay at Soquel High, just drive there at 8:30 and return to pick up by around noon.

Hello all!
It was nice to see the kids again after almost two weeks. I was home sick on Weds but was happy to return to their enthusiastic greetings.

We are done with CST testing except for a few students who missed tests due to absences.

Due tomorrow:
Bring Americas Map in progress. We will work on it in class.
Bring a list of (with dates) 10-15 important events in your life to make your timeline.

I am sending home Progress Reports tomorrow which include Math, Science, Listening and Speaking, PE, Writing, Reading and Social Studies. As we discussed previously, this trimester is when students start having larger projects that count for more, so grades are dependent on doing well on fewer assignments. The Autobiography, which is due in Final Form next Thursday, is the major part of the writing grade. The Environmental Speech and Research project is the major part of Science. Please keep pace with the requirements and you'll do fine.

We need parents to drive to and from Soquel High School to watch our sixth grade team compete in the International Games. So far I only have one parent volunteer to drive. It is Friday, May 20 from 8:15 to about noon. You do not have to stay at the high school, you just have to drop off and bring back to Rio.

We have had a good response from parents willing to help during the Final Party day on May 27--please let the room moms Suzanne Z or Lisa Smith know if you are able to drive and chaperone that day. We need a lot of help. Thank you!

We've finally arrived at Spring Break, and not a moment too soon. Everyone should benefit from a little more sleep, some down time and a slower pace.

There is no Math homework over the break, but if students are unsure of any of the Math we've covered, bringing home the textbook to review any concepts necessary. Standardized testing starts on Tuesday, so we appreciate students being fully rested and well-fed!

On Thursday, May 5, the remainder of the written part of the autobiography is due. Therefore, students should be working on, or at least gathering information for their autobiographies, parts 1 (Family Background) and 4 (The Future). Photos and timeline, family tree, or any other handouts are not due until the Final Draft, which will be due on Thursday, May 12.

Students should also be reading and be halfway done with the Giver by return from break.
Also, students should be working on Greek Projects which will be due a couple of weeks after we return.

Students have begun work on their collaborative Greek Myth projects which will be due in the week after spring break. They should be arranging schedules to meet outside of school a few times to practice, make costumes and write scripts, as well as filming the myth. Homemade costumes are fine--togas are the mainstay of this kind of production. Students can make different head pieces or other identifying accessories for each character.

Students need to remember to have ALL supplies at school that they need each and every day. See the old list (previous blog) from the beginning of the year. It is hard when a project or assignment requires colored pencils or fine felt tip pens in class, and they are borrowing from others. Check again to make sure all necessary supplies are here.

We have almost run out of boxes of Kleenex. If you happen to have an extra one on hand at home or are buying a big pack, please send in a box, if possible. We don't need a full class set, but some more would be appreciated!

We finished the very interesting movie on the female pharaoh, Hatshepsut today and had a great discussion about her legacy, her missing mummy and who wanted to remove her name from history. Now we are working on our Egypt pop-up books, most of which we'll do in class.

Science Reports rough drafts will be all edited by the teacher and returned Friday. Students need to revise their work and work on their final drafts and poster displays for next week.

Tomorrow we have two tests: Math Chapter 2 & the Europe Map Practice Test.

Please turn in money for the Rosicrucian Field Trip. $13 per person, including drivers.

It was a full day with lovely weather!

We are studying Egypt and doing some investigation into the mystery of Hatshepsut, one the most powerful Pharoahs who ruled as a king though she was a woman. Next week we start our Egypt pop-up books.

We now have enough (even more than enough) drivers for the Rosicrucian Museum. However, of the 10 parents offering to drive, only 5 have turned in paperwork regarding license and insurance. Please do so if you have not done that yet ( you can pick it up and return it to the office).

We still need parent helpers for the Science Fair to manage the runners and keep to a schedule.

WOW!!!! Thank you all for the wonderful printer for our classroom. It will be so nice to have a NEW working piece of equipment. :) We really use our classroom printer A LOT!!!

Our field trip to the O'Neill Sea Odyssey was really fun, warm and NOT RAINING! However, we couldn't go out into the ocean because of strong swells from the storm. We got to troll through the harbor and learned and saw MANY things! Most important, though, is how to take care of the ocean. We were glad to see Joey back in school today after his pole crash and stitches.

We enjoyed a Chanukkah celebration today with latkes and jelly donuts. Thanks to Lisa Smith and Suzanne Zielger! The kids got to play dreidel and listen to Chanukkah stories.

Monday we attend the O'Neill Sea Odyssey. Please remind students to dress VERY warmly and wear non-marking soles. If rain is indicated everyone should bring raingear.

The students were very motivated and enthusiastic about the new reading program. We spent some time in the Library and discussing how to pick books that meet the criteria for the Book Bingo. We highly recommend that students get library cards to the Santa Cruz Public Library if they don't already have them. Books can be requested online and the database accessed from any computer, including the school library.

We had a great volunteer response to the O'Neill Sea Odyssey!! At this time, we have all the drivers we need. We also have two back-up drivers. I am e-mailing those who are driving and also those who will be back-up, in case one or more of the other parents can't make it.

The speeches were very interesting today! We learned how to do many different things and were impressed with the variety of skills the students have. :)

I am proud to announce that every single student in this class passed the Africa Map test, and the majority got 90% or higher. I am amazed!

Thank you so much to our hard working Room Parents, Suzanne and Lisa, as well as the many parents who donated time and goodies to make the Halloween Party a success. Rest assured that all the toilet paper got picked up.

There is no homework over the weekend.

Today we began reviewing Unit 1 of Social Studies. The final test will be next week, most likely on Tuesday. The students are reviewing many terms and ideas having to do with Early Humans.

We are also working on the Word of the Day Vocabulary test, which includes 20 difficult vocabulary words. We are playing Bingo with the definitions and students should be studying them each night as well.

Final test on Africa Geography is on Friday.

On Friday we will have the Early Human Unit test and the final Africa Geography test.

Many students earned A grades on the Africa practice test; those students will not have to retake the test. I will return those tests on Monday.
